Northern Ireland, Liberty Caps #9173821 - 11/02/08 06:32 PM (15 years, 9 months ago) |
I live in Northern Ireland and this afternoon me and my friend went hunting for some magic mushrooms at our nearest golf course. Now before hand we done some research on them so we new what exactly to go looking for and on our hunt we came across what seems to look like the liberty cap ones and they very well could be liberty caps, however, Im no expert and would just like to double check and make sure they are the right ones before we consume them. We found them growing just out on the fair way of the golf course scattered about. The shrooms look a lot like, if not identical, to some of the pictures Ive seen of the liberty caps on the internet. They are on average about 7-8cm tall or so, havent exactly measured them. They also have a Brown coloured stem with a lightly brown tanned cap that has a wee nipple growing on them, and then the rim around the bottom of the cap appears to be black as so does the gills. We also took a few spore prints which appeared to leave a dark purple Brown kind of colour. So Im just wondering would these appear safe to take? Do they sound any thing like liberty caps? Thanks anyone that can help out!

they may be. the gills should not look black though. in young speciments they should look like this: and should deepen to a dark purple-brown: in both cases they retain a pale color on the very bottom edge of the gills plates, where few or no spore bearing basidia are present. the cap surface should be viscid [sticky/slimy] when fresh and moist, caused by a thin gelataeonous membrane called a pellicle. in young specimens, and only when they are still moist and slimy, you should be able to peel it off, and it should look kind of stretchy as you peel. the spore print color is something you should be certain about, and this takes a bit of practice. as the mushrooms begin to dry, they should fade to a light straw or tan color. while moist, they should be striate, at least at the very edges of he cap [having lines running down where the gills show through]. the stipe should be flexible, wherein you can wrap it around your finger without it's breaking.

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
