– CATEGORY BREAKDOWN –

Fun (8 out of 10)

For the fun section of the Meeple Land review, we award a fantastic 8 out of 10. The main source of the fun comes from you juggling many different things, while 100% of what is happening is thematically on point; constantly making tough decisions to forge your own path (literally and figuratively). You have a personal space and you need to fill it with theme park rides and attractions. You have limited money to do this and everyone is fighting over the same customers.

Every game is different and every move has many pros and cons, as well as, effects of your opponents. No one aspect of gameplay is going to make you jump out of your seat and yell “wow”, but each and every thing coming together real fill the gameplay. The game takes place over four rounds and this is the perfect amount of time to have room to grow and develop but be quick enough to be on the edge of your seat the whole time.

Replayability (7 out of 10)

For the replayability section of the Meeple Land review, we award a great 7 out of 10. Every game is completely different, there are going to be different attractions to buy, people to visit and puzzle configurations of theme parks build. The freshness of Meeple Land goes a long way in making you ready to take it on game after game.

At the end of the day, however, you are just building a park with a mixture of 10 or so different things in the same type of space. This can easily can very stale but what saves the game is that because everything is so limited, from people to building options, this kicks the player interaction up and takes the fight into the arena intead of just in your head about your own park. Everything together, a theme of this review, synergistically kicks everything else up a notch.

Player Interaction (7 out of 10)

For the player interaction section of the Meeple Land review, we award a great 7 out of 10. Whenever you have a game where players mainly have to worry about a tableau (their own player area), you really have to fight to make sure there is a good mix of player interaction. Meeple Land did a very respectable job in this area.

Limited tiles are available for purchase for all players at once making rare items hot commodities and decisions very difficult. Having to routinely strategize your decisions based on where your opponents are going is the norm. Speaking of drafting, there are also the meeples. Players are thrown on the clock with decision making since the first person to opt-out of building gets the first crack at which batch of visitors will get added to the park.

Quality (9 out of 10)

For the quality section of the Meeple Land review, we award a fantastic 9 out of 10. This is a resource management game but you are not managing just one thing. Meeple Land is so well layered that you are managing three very distinct areas and they all work together harmoniously. You have to manage your money, visitors and space. Each one of these has their own rules, strategies and effects on the overall game. The fact these all work together so well is a true testament to the designers Cyrille Allard and Frédéric Guérard.

In addition to the game being constructed well, the components are about as nice as they could be. Publisher Blue Orange is known for quality components so this is no surprise. This is led by the hundreds of tiny colored wooden meeple figures that win an award from us for most adorable game piece ever. There are tons of tiles that represent the different attractions that are a solid cardboard and a few sheets of things where it makes sense. For as much as comes in the box, you are getting a good bang for your buck.

Art & Style (7 out of 10)

For the art & style section of the Meeple Land review, we award a great 7 out of 10. The artist Tomasz Larek and the designers transport you to a world of imagining the creation of your own theme park. They do a fantastic job of making everything you do be very on point with that experience. The art is very solid and where it needs to be but there certainly could be more variety. Most tiles repeat art but they do try and have a responsibility to keep things someone uniform (because of scoring) so can’t really ding them for that.

When first seeing the term “Meeple” used in the title, it seemed like it would be more of a hip buzz word ploy than a serious game, but that is not the case in any sense. In fact, the use of Meeple to represent the people feels more like a respectful nod and fits perfectly with conveying what the game is than anything else. At the end of the day, you are fighting over how you place meeples (adorable wooden tokens) into your park.
