In hedendaags IJsland werd een kistje met glasplaatfoto’s gevonden, gemaakt door een Deense missionaris in de negentiende eeuw. Met die mededeling begint dit IJslandse drama, dat de barre zendingsreis van de priester en het ontstaan van die foto’s verbeeldt. Het ouderwetse beeldformaat, de prachtige composities en de contemplatieve toon leveren een film op die aanvoelt als een levend fotoalbum. Waarin spanning en humor trouwens niet ontbreken: de machtsstrijd tussen de bleue priester en diens stugge gids leidt tot magnifieke scènes. Regisseur Pálmason maakte eerder A White, White Day, ook al zo stemmig en mysterieus.
